PDA SECURITY - browsing wireless internet:

The bookmark wireless websites here go all the way back to year 2002. Some or many may no longer exist or may have changed ownerships. Security in both desktop and pda has drastically changed worst - more dangerous. In fact, with an unprotected home pc it is not expected to last a month without infection (virus) and infestation (adware/spyware). This may be the future of pda wireless internet. It can not be assumned new pda owners are even aware of threats to them including the first "cross over" malware able to infect the pda from the home pc (desktop). That is dangerous enough for even Synching the device. For the wireless internet, simply do not access it unprotected. Malware has evolved greatly and is much more sophisticated then the first computer virus. For pda - here is sample information for a threat. Note that this trojan can be installed without knowledge simply by visiting a malicious content website (or through unsafe email practices - opening unknown attachments).....

Backdoor.Brador.A (PDA backdoor trojan):
http://shiroshimadan.blog.com/ (brief clip):
"This is the first known backdoor Trojan horse for PDAs. The subject program, identified as Backdoor.Brador.A, attacks PDAs running the Windows operating system. And like all backdoors, it cannot spread by itself. The Trojan arrives as an e-mail attachment or can be downloaded from the Internet. Also, it has a complete set of destructive functions characteristic for backdoors. After it is installed, this small program is activated when the PDA is restarted and begins to look for a remote administrator to take control of the device. Security specialists claim the virus was written by a Russian virus coder since it was attached to an e-mail with a Russian sender address and contained Russian text. Fortunately, the Trojans threat control and removal was rated as "easy". The important thing about this virus is not the number of devices affected, because this number is very small, but the fact that this is the first one that appeared on the "market" is considered to be very important. We have to admit that it is hardly surprising that viruses have found their way to mobile devices. This is the natural trend. Where technology goes, viruses will follow. As the new technology shifts into the mobile market, these threats will move in that direction also. The specialists from the Kaspersky Labs claim they were expecting a virus attack on a PDA, due to the latest attacks against other mobile devices. Now, the PDA users look at a real danger and it is a well known fact that interested intruders will grab the chance to attack PDAs and mobile phones in the near future. Virus threats development for mobile devices is passing through the same stages as the one for desktops. Almost at the same time with the appearance of the first Trojan for PDAs, the first virus to affect cell phones has also arrived. This worm is called Cabir, and it has been spotted by some security specialists who issued an alert concerning the danger. Cabir spreads using a file named Caribe.sis and travels across devices working with the Symbian operating system which is used in PDAs and many cell phones. Cabir places itself usually on a mobile device when a user agrees to a transmission showing the text message "Caribe". After that the worm begins a nonstop search particularly for Bluetooth-connected wireless devices to send itself to. Also, the batterys life of the infected device is harshly reduced during this process. The inventors of Cabir did not design the worm to spread massively. It was intended to be a test demonstrating that these mobile devices can be easily infected by viruses because of their rapid maturation. The worm rated with a low risk because it has to be intentionally activated by a mobile phone user, and also allowing the Caribe package requires pressing a button prior the files can be loaded into the receiving phone. It was predictable that viruses and worms for cell phones and PDAs would appear. This is the end result of the impressive advances made in mobile communication technology in the past years. Over time, cell phones and PDAs turn out to be more PC-like, making them vulnerable to viruses. "

Wireless Internet Access:

PDA Wireless Internet Access.....
There are now many ways to use PDA to gain wireless access to the Internet, living up to their name "mobile computers". On this page, many links/products will be displayed as an orientation of available scenarios to get connected wirelessly with your PDA. This should be helpful to newcomers and veteran user/owners alike - as many of these products are relatively new and the industry and access is growing practically daily.

NOTES: It is recommended from experience to first research and choose your Wireless Internet Provider first (such as AT&T, Earthlink, T-Mobile and so on). You will want to look at price plans for Unlimited Access or Daily and Weekly rates. Then you will want to look at what products are supported. For instance the most popular are Sierra Wireless AirCards that many ISP's support in various model versions (Card slides into Compact Flash jacket slot). This is very very crucial especially when using Wireless Web Enabled Cellular Phones that, by cable, connect your PDA mobile computer to the wireless internet for access. You must look up the phone model and match it to Provider to see if they support it, and also if a wireless cable kit is available for your PDA matching the cell phone model. These were originally called "Data Enabled" Cell Phones for use with Laptops and PDA for wireless access by a Provider that supported Data Connections wirelessly. The same is true for Phone Cards to match.

Unibeam
One annoying aspect of PocketPC PDAs is that they use a Microsoft proprietary protocol for Infrared file transfers called "IrSquirt". Other Microsoft operating systems (ex. Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP) use variations of a different Infrared protocol called "IrOBEX" (IrDA Object Exchange). Variations of this same protocol are used by PalmOS based PDAs and many other handheld devices (ex. Nokia phones). There are several different PocketPC programs intended to overcome this inherent incompatibility between Windows CE and other devices and Windows OSs, but they generally require you to have some idea of what specific protocol the device/PC you are attempting to communicate with is using. This is fine for techno geeks, but most of us have plenty of other things to use our long-term memory for. Enter UniBeam 1.0. UniBeam will send and receive files via Infrared, automatically detecting the appropriate protocol (ex. IrSquirt, 'standard' OBEX, Win98 OBEX, etc.). No protocol selection or configuration is required.

BizBeam by Two Peaks
Bizbeam is a simple utility that memorizes two business cards and a specific file for easy beaming. A nice feature of this utility is that it includes a Today Screen plug-in which allows seding out a business card by simple tapping on the specific icons with your fingertips. If you feel that screen real estate is too important for you, a hardware button can also be assigned to bring up the full screen interface which also has the same large icons that does away with using a stylus. Either way it takes no more than two button presses/taps to send out a business card.
